Company Profile:
The Isis Central Sugar Mill Company was registered as a Company on 16th July 1894. The factory was constructed by Walkers Ltd in 1896-1897. In the first year of operation, the Mill crushed the equivalent of 7,918 tonnes of cane to yield 807 tonnes of sugar. At that time, there were 30 cane suppliers who received approximately 96c (10 shillings) per tonne for their cane.
1n 1924, the Company took over the Doolbi Mill and the cane from this area was delivered to rail to Isis Mill. The CSR Childers Mill closed in 1933 and the rolling stock, tramway system and cane supply was transferred to the Isis Central Sugar Mill leaving this Mill the sole survivor within the Childers area.
At present, there are approximately 200 growers supplying sugar cane to the Mill and the cane is harvested from an area of approximately 13,000 hectares. All the cane is delivered to the Mill over 153 kilometres of narrow gauge (610mm) railway. The Mill has, in a single season, processed 1,364,721 tonnes of cane for the production of 186,159 tonnes of raw sugar.
